Photographer offers park sessions

February 19, 2010 by Sara Bristol

Mom-photographer Kelly Allan believes the best pictures of children are when they’re having fun, not posing in a studio. To catch kids with candid smiles, the owner of Seven Safaris Photography is hosting three playtime photo sessions this spring at Yakima parks.

For $40 per child, families can drop in to play and hire Allan to capture the moment. Allan will focus on one child at a time on a first-come, first-served basis. Within a week of the photo session, she’ll mail parents a disk of at least 10 images.

The following sessions are scheduled:

  • 10 a.m. to noon March 30 at Franklin Park
  • 9:30-11:30 a.m. May 13 at Randall Park
  • 9-11 a.m. June 15 at Sarg Hubbard Park

To sign up, call Allan at 509-949-7606 or e-mail kellyallan@msn.com.

Odd question answering service

February 19, 2010 by Sara Bristol

One fun thing about working for a newspaper is the unusual questions we sometimes get asked. Want to know what the low temperature was last Tuesday or what time the city bus is going to pass by your house? For whatever reason, some folks think the newspaper staff might be a good source for this type of info.

Though we don’t know everything, there’s a certain amount of job security that comes from providing people with the information they’re seeking. And, hey, I can Google as well as the next guy, so I typically try to track down answers when I can.

Maybe I learn something, too.

So, today I took a call from someone who was wondering how to make crystals from epsom salts.

I’d never heard of this before, but I found the answer easy enough. If you’re looking for something to do with the kiddos, it’s a pretty simple science project .

But, I have to say that this crystallization project (i.e. how to make rock candy) looks much more delicious:

If you’re looking for other science fair ideas, Michaels (1729 S. First St., Yakima; 452-6484) is hosting a free Science Fair Demonstration from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27. Kids can make a free molecule project with Crayola Model Magic, while supplies last.

Explore math, science at Engineering Day

February 15, 2010 by Sara Bristol

The local chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers wants to get kids hooked on math and science. The group is hosting an Engineering Day for Kids on Feb. 20.

The free event for elementary school students will offer hands-on activities and simple projects, such as building a vehicle with Lifesavers and straws, that can be replicated at home; activity information sheets will be provided.

Engineering Day for Kids will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 20 in the Hopf Union Building (HUB) at Yakima Valley Community College in Yakima. For more information, contact Natalie Martinkus at 457-4009, ext. 224.
