Battling over band lessons?

“Sometimes it becomes a battle to try to get a child to do something they don’t want to do,” says Dorothy Vick, an elementary school music teacher and mother of three.

Vick recalls three different days her eldest daughter, now 20, wanted to quit piano lessons in lieu of social activities.

The two battled, and Mom won: “When she became a senior, I got a thank you card that said thank you for never letting me quit,” Vick says. Now her singer-songwriter daughter, Brenna, is studying sound production and playing folk gigs in Memphis, Tenn.

“Every kid faces a hurdle every now and then,” says Vick, stressing that her music-lesson battles with Brenna were isolated incidents rather than a pattern.

If a child is resisting practice on a regular basis and the process is becoming destructive, parents might want to consider taking a break or letting the child explore a different interest.
